Kikoh Matsuura | Singularity

This universe is believed to have begun from a singularity—an infinitely small point, still beyond comprehension, that marked the origin of all existence. Everything that exists here and now, including ourselves, is made of countless particles that emerged from that very beginning. Within the same continuous flow that has persisted since that origin, we share something, and even now, we remain connected.

This work is a sound installation composed of countless overlapping voices. A voice, released with breath, is the most internal tremor of human existence—a trace that rises from the depths of the body. To encounter someone’s voice is to touch a moment of their being— to quietly reexamine the contours of oneself while resonating with the unseen presence of another. Though each voice is distinct, as they layer and intertwine, the boundaries of the individual begin to dissolve, eventually becoming undulating waves of sound that gently fill the space. Just as particles come together to shape the world, these diverse presences resonate and harmonize, raising a shared “place” into being. The audience, alone in this vast space, is invited to confront the sound—and thus their own existence— quietly, and face-to-face. It is as if, in that solitary moment, sound and body converge once again at that primordial “point,” becoming particles that shape the world— within a tranquil time that begins at the origin and flows endlessly into eternity.
