The term "chromosome," originating in 1888, is derived from the Greek words for color and body. Chromosomes are located within the cells that shape us, composed of DNA and proteins that record genetic information. In this artwork, attention is directed towards its form, expressed as a sculpture roughly the height of a person. The appearance, illuminated by surface texture and lighting, resembles weathered ancient relics. Contemplating the mechanisms of information storage, reproduction, and transmission, one may also focus on the exhibition site, Tokyo Tower, its surroundings, and the forms and patterns of sand surrounding the artwork. chromosomeとは、染色体を意味します。1888年に生まれたこの言葉は、ギリシア語の色と体に由来しています。染色体は私たちを形作る細胞のなかにあり、遺伝情報を記録したDNAとたんぱく質から構成されています。この作品では、その造形に目を向け、人の背丈ほどの大きさの彫刻として表現しました。表面の質感や照明に照らされる様子は、風化した古の遺物のようでもあります。情報が保存され、再生され、伝えられていく仕組みについて思いを巡らせながら、展示場所である東京タワーやその立地、作品を囲んでいる砂のかたちや模様にも目を向け、その背景にある物語を考えてみていただけたら嬉しいです。
