Kikoh Matsuura | The Verse of Becoming

Created in 2025
|Overview

Emotion stirs, thought circulates, and creation comes into being.
This unfolding is not mine alone, but a phenomenon nurtured within an unbroken chain of life spanning billions of years.
As an artist, I turned inward to seek the origin of my own creativity— into the depths of the body, toward the genome, the archive of life’s memory. There, I encountered sequences shaped through evolution and shared among all humans, along with subtle variations that belong only to me.

This work is based on my personal exome analysis. I selected genes associated with emotion, cognition, and creativity, and engraved their translated amino acid sequences onto transparent acrylic. Sites of variation appear as reversed characters— not as flaws, but as resonances that shape my singular existence. These engraved sequences are fragments of life’s memory, and at the same time, a quiet autobiography of my being as an artist.

|Statement

There are times when I overlap myself with others and feel a sense of distortion or lack.
Yet this fluctuation is not a flaw to be denied, but something that makes me who I am.

It is a subtle variation engraved in my genes,
a trace of individuality residing within the memory of life.
And this fluctuation is not mine alone—
it is a resonance that runs through the very existence of life itself.

This work is an attempt to quietly observe the meaning of “being myself,”
as it drifts before language is formed.

|Technical Description

The genetic information used in this work is based on the artist’s personal exome analysis. Exome analysis focuses on the “exon” regions of the human genome—segments that encode proteins and comprise only about 1–2% of the entire genome. These regions are known to contain functionally significant variations that influence bodily functions, characteristics, and the formation of individuality. The extracted genetic information is translated into amino acid sequences. Amino acids are the fundamental units that compose proteins, which are essential for sustaining life. Proteins not only form the structures of cells and organs, but also play a central role in neural signaling, memory and emotional formation, and other biological processes that underlie thought and inner experience.
